BELIEVE it or not, but the composers behind A Whole New World, from the Disney hit Aladdin in 1992, actually received an Academy Award for the high-pitched anthem.

It is possible, however, that the three 11-year-olds who sung it yesterday at the Wollongong Eisteddfod made their choice not so much because of the tune's critical acclaim, but rather because blonde reality-TV star Jessica Simpson covered it last year.

To the relief of the audience though, that was about as close to contemporary as it got, and the region's baby-boomers had the whole day to indulge their nostalgia during the Eisteddfod's songs from film section.

They bopped their heads to everything from Kermit's The Rainbow Connection, to I Whistle A Happy Tune, from Rodgers and Hammerstein's The King And I (we're going back to 1956, but some in the audience may have even seen one of Yul Brynner's 4000 on-stage renditions of the song).

It was left however, to the dulcet tones of Danielle Turner to transport the audience back to 1964 and the umbrella-wielding vision of Super Nanny's predecessor Mary Poppins. "Mary Poppins is more kind," said Danielle, who was awarded the blue ribbon for her performance. "And maybe a bit more fun."
